Twinkie Trifle

Hostess Brand creditors, this one's for you!  A nice, boozy Twinkie Trifle!

Surely you've heard of the Hostess Brand Inc. bankruptcy filing.  Well, I did, and I have not heard anything so disturbing in a looong time. The Twinkie is in danger!!  That helpless little lovely cake-y cream-y bit of heaven in peril!  EEeeeek! It was clear that Jelly Shot Test Kitchen had to act!
(Never let it be said that Jelly Shot Test Kitchen ignored its duty as a good corporate citizen . . .especially when iconic snack food was at stake.)

So, Hostess Brand creditors, this one's for you.  Underfunded pensions and creditors committees are a drag, but hopefully this little recipe will brighten your day - its a trifle!  Made with Twinkies!  And whipped cream!  And, perhaps more importantly for you . . . Pudding Shot filling!  (Yes, that IS just what it sounds like - pudding with booze in it. . . yup, just the ticket, in-DEED.)

So, hope you enjoy, Hostess Brand creditors, Hostess Brand employees, and all of you out in Jellyshotland!

XOXOX

Michelle

P.S.  To make this trifle alcohol-free (and we recommend this only for children or others who choose not to imbibe, not Hostess Brand creditors or employees) just make the pudding as directed on the box, and omit sprinkling the Twinkie layers with liqueur!

Twinkie Trifle (with pudding shot filling!)

Implements: Trifle dish or large bowl.  (I used this bowl from IKEA, capacity = 12 cups.)

Ingredients:
  • 2 3.2 oz boxes instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka (I vote for chocolate flavored!)
  • 4 cups whipped topping or whipped cream (separated – you’ll use some in the filling and some for layering), plus additional for on top if desired
  • 15 Twinkies, unwrapped and sliced in half horizontally
  • 1/2 cup white crème de cacao or white chocolate liqueur
  • White chocolate shavings for garnish, if desired

Instructions:
First, make the vanilla pudding shot filling.  Pour the pudding mix into a large mixing bowl.  Add the milk and the vodka and stir until the mixture is completely combined and begins to thicken.  Stir in 2 cups of the whipped topping.

Layer the ingredients in the trifle bowl in this order:  Pudding, whipped topping, twinkies, and a few tablespoons of the liqueur sprinkled over the Twinkies.  Repeat until ingredients are expended.

Refrigerate trifle for several hours or overnight, to allow flavors to blend.

Before serving, top with additional whipped topping and white chocolate shavings, if desired.
